Welcome to the Chapel Hill Dojo of Shotokan Karate of America (SKA), a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching traditional Karate-do. SKA was founded by Tsutomu Ohshima in 1955.

Karate is a weaponless means of self defense and a martial art. It involves a variety of techniques, including blocks, strikes, evasions, throws, and joint manipulations. The object of true karate practice is the perfection of oneself through the perfection of the art.

Originally this was the most important thing about martial arts – to reach a higher level, to become a strong human being. This kind of strength doesn’t come from big muscles. It comes from being strict with yourself. That is the ideal of martial arts.   —Tsutomu Ohshima

Our practices are held in the Lower School Gymnasium of the Duke School. Contact us if you are interested in learning more, checking us out, or joining our dojo.
